Komagatake View Onuma Park
In the quasi-national park are the three lakes of Onuma, Konuma, and Junsainuma, formed by an eruption of Komagatake (1,133m). Blooming Asian skunk cabbages in spring and water lilies in summer, and the snowscapes of winter make for enjoyable walks.

Hokkaido Kelp Hall
Everything you ever wanted to know about kelp is told through the clever use of videos, sounds, replicas, and lighting. You can view the production of kelp products in the hall factory through glass panels, and there is a sales corner for souvenirs made from the kelp produced on site.

Shikabe Geyser Park
Shikabe Geyser Park, where you can feel the breath of nature through the power of the beating thermal heat. While resting your feet in a hot foot bath, you can watch the Miracle Show that will take your breath away with its 100-degree boiling water shooting 15 meters into the air (entrance fee: 300 yen).

Goryokaku
From feudalism Edo to the modern age, Goryokaku tells us the saga of the men who lived at the turning point of history. Built as the first Western-style fortress in Japan, this area, where the last civil war took place, is now famous for its cherry blossoms and witeria, and has become a Special Historical Site designated by the nation.

The change from feudalism to the modern age. Goryokaku tells the saga of the men who lived at this turning-point in history. Built as the first Western-style fortress in Japan, this area, where the last civil rebellion took place, is now famous for its cherry blossoms and wisteria and is ranked as a Special Historical Site by the national government.

Russian Orthodox Church
There are many churches and temples in the Motomachi area, the area that might be called the most Hakodate-like part of the city. The Orthodox Church is one of the most famous. It is a Greek Orthodox church designed in the Russian Byzantine style.

Hakodate Morning Market
A 1-minute walk from Hakodate station. 360 stalls cover an area of 3 hectares. Fresh fish and home-grown vegetables line the stalls.

The night view from Mt. Hakodate
Mt. Hakodate offers a panoramic view of the beautiful lights of Hakodate. The large ropeway, which can carry 125 people, takes you on a fun aerial ride for the three minutes it takes to get to the top. From summer to autumn, the lights of squid fisherman are a seasonal traditional sight in Hakodate.

Hakodate Orthodox Church

Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall (Important Cultural Property)
Built in 1910, this is one of the most famous examples of Meiji period architecture in Hokkaido. Presently, it holds classical music concerts and other events, and is known as a romantic site open to the public.

Trappistine Convent
Surrounded by groves of trees, this mysteriously beautiful building was the first nunnery in Japan. The convent, built in red brick that brings back memories of the good old days, still houses about 70 nuns who follow the precepts of St. Benedict, and provide for all their own needs.

Matsumae Castle
Matsumae Park, home to the northernmost castle in Japan, Matsumae Castle, is famed nationwide for its cherry blossoms. Ten thousand cherries of 250 different species can be enjoyed for about a month from late April to early May.
