Hakone Shrine

Hakone Check Point and Museum
The Tokugawa Shogunate established the Hakone Check Point in 1619 to prevent an insurrection of feudal lords, and the facility continued to impose strict rules posing a burden on travelers for more than 250 years. The current guardhouse was restored in 1965.

The Old Hakone Road
The old Hakone Road is a section of the old Tokaido Road, once referred to as the Hakone Eight Ri (1 ri = 3.9 km) indicating the distance from Odawara to Mishima, was considered very difficult to pass. Japanese cedar-lined stone streets and the Hakone Check Point remain even today along the shores of Lake Ashi.

Hakone Gora Park
After Japan's Meiji Era (1868-1912), the Gora area was developed as a summer resort area for people in the southern part of Tokyo, and the Hakone Gora Park itself was founded in 1914 as a family resort destination for nobility and other members of the upper class.
