Located on the north side of JR Onomichi Station is Mt. Senkoji, one of Japan's top 100 scenic spots. To reach Senkoji Park, which stretches from the summit to the mid-slope of the mountain, take a bus from Onomichi Station to Nagaeguchi Bus Stop and transfer to the Senkoji Mountain Ropeway, arriving in about 3 minutes. The ropeway passes over historic sites such as Ushitora Shrine, said to be the oldest in Onomichi, and Senkoji Temple, founded in 806, making it the only ropeway in Japan with such a unique route. During the 3-minute aerial ride, you can enjoy seasonal views of cherry blossoms, azaleas, and autumn leaves, as well as sweeping views of Onomichi Waterway, Japan's first designated heritage site, and the picturesque scenery of Onomichi and the Seto Inland Sea.

▲From Adobe Stock :A Cat Alley Where You Can Encounter Art Cats and Real Cats

Proceed along the small alley to the left of Gongen Shrine, which stretches about 200 meters in length; this is Cat Alley. Onomichi has always been home to many cats, but thanks to the Cat Alley project by artist Haruki Sonoyama, it has drawn the attention of cat lovers and has come to be known as a cat town. In this narrow alley, you can see Sonoyama's lucky cat painted on round stones and cat art that likens cracks in the stairs to cats. You may also encounter real cats. It’s also fun to peek into cafes, bars, and small shops that have been converted from old houses.

The Onomichi City Museum of Art, located in Senkoji Park, offers a relaxing space to engage with a wide range of art and culture, free from the constraints of time, country, and genre. In addition to a rich collection of works, including those by local artists from Onomichi, the building itself is also captivating. The main building features a traditional tiled gabled roof, while the new wing, renovated and expanded by architect Tadao Ando, is made of exposed concrete. Together, they enhance each other and blend beautifully with the natural surroundings and cityscape of Setouchi.

Currently, Okonomi Village houses 23 restaurants specializing in Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, each proud of their unique taste. Its origins date back to the post-war era, when 50 okonomiyaki stalls lined Shin-Tenchi Square in downtown Hiroshima. In 1963, Okonomi Village moved to a two-story prefabricated building, gaining national popularity, and even after relocating to its current building in 1992, it continues to be loved for its unchanged flavors, vibrancy, and friendliness.

▲From : Adobe Stock「The Great Torii viewed from Itsukushima Shrine」

Miyajima, also known as Itsukushima, has long been regarded as a sacred island, a site of worship. The Itsukushima Shrine was established on this divine island in 593. Later, Taira no Kiyomori became a devout believer of the shrine and built the current sea temple in 1168. Standing about 160 meters above the sea from the shrine, the Great Torii Gate, a symbol of the Itsukushima Shrine, is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. During high tide, the contrast of the red shrine and torii gate against the sea is beautiful, while during low tide, a path emerges to the torii gate. The Itsukushima Shrine changes its appearance with the tides and was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

On August 6, 1945, an atomic bomb exploded in the bustling center of Hiroshima city. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was completed to honor the souls of those who lost their lives in the bombing and to transform the area around the hypocenter into a symbol of peace. Within the park, there is the World Heritage Site, the Atomic Bomb Dome, which retains its appearance from the time of the bombing, as well as monuments and facilities that promote peace, such as the Statue of the A-Bombed Child, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Monument, and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, which conveys the impact of the atomic bomb and the history of Hiroshima before and after the bombing. The main building of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum has also been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, making it the first post-war building to receive this designation.
