Nagoya Castle

Completed in 1615 under the orders of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, Nagoya Castle is crowned with golden shachihoko—ornamental tiger-headed carp—and boasts the largest floorspace of any castle keep in Japan. Once serving as a military facility along with the splendid Hommaru Palace, it later became Japan’s first castle designated as a National Treasure.
Although much of it was lost in wartime air raids, the castle remains a designated National Historic Site, and ongoing restoration is returning it to its original grandeur.
