Shirakawa-go

Shirakawa-go in winter presents a truly wondrous scene, with its A-frame “gassho-zukuri” houses enveloped in a blanket of snow. The storybook atmosphere here exudes a quintessential Japanese charm. It was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1995, and was also selected as one of the Top 100 Sustainable Destinations in 2020.

While overtourism impacts living environments in many different regions, Shirakawa-go is exploring ways to welcome visitors while protecting the livelihoods of its local residents. The spirit of mutual support upheld here, where residents help one another in maintaining their homes and sustaining their way of life, has led to this area being recognized globally as a model for sustainable tourism.
