Sankeien Garden, a nationally designated scenic spot.
Sankeien is a Japanese garden created by the businessman Hara Sankei.
The park, which covers an undulating area of 175,000㎡ in Honmoku, Yokohama, is cleverly arranged with historical buildings such as three-story pagodas and teahouses collected from Kyoto, Kamakura, and other places. The seasonal flowers of plum, cherry, wisteria, lotus, and autumn leaves, as well as vibrant fresh greenery, further highlight these historical buildings, allowing visitors to enjoy the harmony between ancient architecture and nature.
(As of 2022, of the 17 ancient buildings in the park, 10 are designated as Important Cultural Properties and 3 are designated as Tangible Cultural Properties by the City of Yokohama.)
This area was opened to the public in 1906 (Meiji 39).
The three-story pagoda, a 550-year-old structure moved from Kyoto’s Tomyoji Temple, serves as a landmark, and visitors can enjoy seasonal flowers such as plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, irises, and lotus flowers.
The moment you step into the garden from the main gate, the view of the three-story pagoda across the pond is truly breathtaking.
