Hokkaido Country Club Ōnuma Course

Since opening in 1965, this prestigious course has been shaped by more than 60 years of history and tradition, and is regarded as one of southern Hokkaidō’s leading golf courses. Set amid the magnificent natural surroundings of Ōnuma Quasi-National Park, the course offers the expansive sense of openness so characteristic of Hokkaidō, while boasting one of the highest course ratings in the region from the regular tees. Combining overwhelming natural beauty with strategic challenge, it is a true championship course.

Tournament Hosting History

  • Nitori Ladies Golf Tournament (2025)

One of Hokkaidō’s most challenging championship courses, overlooking majestic Mt. Komagatake.

The Ōnuma Course at Hokkaido Country Club served as the venue for the 2025 Nitori Ladies Golf Tournament, where top professionals battled under a setup featuring one of the longest yardages in women’s tour history (7,330 yards from the back tees / 6,930 yards from the regular tees) and a par-73 configuration with three par-5 holes on the outward nine.

The beautiful all-bentgrass course is framed by larch and white birch trees.

Stretching from the shores of Ōnuma to the foothills of Mt. Komagatake, the course is framed by larch and white birch trees, giving it the atmosphere of a woodland layout. At the same time, true to a hill course, it offers a rich variety of holes featuring uphill and downhill shots as well as doglegs turning both left and right.

While many women’s tour professionals have remarked on the course’s formidable length, players can enjoy exhilarating shots amid a grand, open setting. At the same time, the gently undulating natural terrain, strategically placed ponds and bunkers, and meticulously maintained bentgrass fairways and rough create a distinctly Hokkaidō test of both skill and strategy.

Among the Ōnuma Course’s signature holes is the par-5 9th, stretching to 630 yards from the back tees (590 yards from the regular tees). A recommended driving-contest hole, it invites players to unleash a full-power tee shot down the wide fairway, though the OB line along the right side leaves little room for complacency. The difficulty of the green rises sharply when the pin is positioned toward the back.

Other memorable holes include the 5th, offering spectacular views of Mt. Komagatake; the 3rd, where a Komagatake-inspired mound known as “Mini Komagatake” awaits beyond the green; and the 18th, where six bunkers make the third shot a demanding proposition. Both the outward and inward nines are filled with distinctive and memorable holes.

Strategically placed bunkers demand careful course management.

In keeping with its status as a tournament course, play is available both with a Course Attendant (Caddie) and on a self-play basis. One of the course’s attractions is that, when playing with a Course Attendant (Caddie), riding carts are permitted on the fairways*.
*Please note that fairway cart access may be restricted depending on weather conditions or in the period immediately preceding tournament play. Fairway cart access for non-course attendant (caddie) rounds may also be unavailable on certain days.

Enjoy a style of golf unique to Hokkaidō. This is what true grandeur feels like.

While the course stretches to a majestic total length of 7,330 yards, in addition to the regular tees it also offers front tees (5,447 yards) and Prince tees (5,447 yards), allowing women and senior players to enjoy a comfortable round as well. On the long holes in particular, the front tees are set considerably farther forward, and it is said that women frequently claim the longest-drive prizes in competitions.

The course also offers convenient access from the Hakodate area, with the Hakodate Onuma Prince Hotel located adjacent to the property. Combining the excitement of tournament golf with the relaxation of a resort stay, it promises a truly first-class golfing experience.
