The name “Ubako” originates from the legend of Sakata Kintoki, also known as Kintaro.
Legend has it that when Kintaro injured his eyes with a withered branch, his mother (some believe that it was his nursemaid instead) who was a Yama-uba yokai received guidance from the Hakone deity to soak the injured eyes in this hot spring, which healed them. From then on, the hot spring became known as Ubako Onsen.
