Former Shimazaki Toson Residence

Designated as a tangible cultural property by Oiso
This was the final residence of Shimazaki Toson, where he spent the last two years of his life until he passed away at the age of 71. Originally a rented villa known as Machiya-en, Toson called it a “Shizu-no-Kusaya” (tranquil thatched hut) and spent his peaceful days in Oiso.

Shimazaki Toson (1872-1943) was a Japanese poet and novelist. He is known for works such as “Wakana-shu,” “Hakai (The Broken Commandment),” and “Yoake-mae (Before the Dawn).”
