The old Hakone Road is a section of the old Tokaido Road, once referred to as the Hakone 8 Ri (1 ri = 3.9 km) indicating the distance from Odawara to Mishima,
was considered very difficult to pass. Japanese cedar-lined stone streets and the Hakone Check Point remain even today along the shores of Lake Ashi.
