An Icon of Hokkaido’s History and Architecture
Affectionately known as “Akarenga” (Red Brick), the Former Hokkaido Government Office Building is one of Sapporo’s most beloved landmarks. Constructed in 1888 in an American neo-Baroque style, its striking red-brick façade and elegant dome evoke the city’s early days as a frontier of modern development in Japan.
Today, the building serves as both a historical museum and photo-worthy destination, offering exhibitions on Hokkaido’s political and cultural history within its beautifully restored interior. Surrounded by seasonal gardens, it’s a tranquil and scenic stop in the heart of the city—perfect for a reflective walk or a deeper understanding of Hokkaido’s past.
