Sapporo Maruyama Zoo

A Nature-Rich Zoo in the Heart of the City

Located at the foot of Mt. Maruyama and adjacent to its pristine primeval forest, Sapporo Maruyama Zoo offers a spacious, immersive setting to connect with wildlife from around the world. Home to nearly 1,000 animals across 180 species, the zoo is one of Japan’s most respected and ecologically conscious zoological parks.

Recent renovations have focused on habitat-style exhibits that recreate the animals’ natural environments, encouraging authentic behaviors and allowing visitors to observe them in more lifelike surroundings. Highlights include polar bears, red pandas, snow leopards, and the thoughtfully designed “zoo forest,” a reimagining of Sapporo’s native landscape from decades past.

Whether visiting with family or exploring on your own, the zoo promises an engaging, educational experience just minutes from the city center.
